A team of rugby players are preparing to take part in an important match where they’ll be raising money for the Lymphoma Association – a charity that supports anyone affected by lymphatic cancer.
The Periwinkles, who have raised almost £30,000 for the charity, will be playing in the annual Robin Thorpe Memorial Rugby Match on May 8 against Hitchin RFC.
Karl Thorpe, club captain said: “We had our first match in 2003 and due to our supporters, players, committee and members of Hitchin RFC; we have been able to raise an impressive amount of money for the Lymphoma Association.
“As well as the event being a great fundraiser for the charity, the day is also a terrific social occasion, made all the more enjoyable by Hitchin RFC’s great bar and club house.”
Karl decided to set up the team after his brother passed away in 2003. He said: “Robin was a great believer in all that rugby stands for and it seemed that a match in his honour was the right thing to do. So many people helped to make the inaugural an event a great success and the match has now become a much looked forward to part of the rugby calendar - not just at Hitchin RFC but with all our other players and supporters from across the country.”
Alice Strudwick, director of fundraising at the Lymphoma Association said: “We’re incredibly grateful to the Periwinkles for all their hard work and support. We rely on donations from the public to continue to provide free information and support to those affected by lymphoma, so it’s people like the Periwinkles that enable us to continue our work. The amount they have raised for our charity is absolutely fantastic!”
