HITCHIN 25 TRING 19 (LV= CUP)

Hitchin Rugby Under 18s progressed to the quarter finals of the national Under 18 LV= Cup on Sunday after a fine win against Hertfordshire rivals Tring.

An odd twist of fate saw a confident Tring side visit King George V Playing Fields on Sunday – they had come and conquered the week before in the National Under 19 Cup. Perhaps there was some over confidence from the visitors as the Hitchin team competed vigorously at set piece and break down in the opening period, with standout work from lock forwards Barnes and Jeffries,  to pin Tring back into their own 22.

Whenever the Hitchin backs ran the ball they caused alarm bells to ring at high decibels in the Tring defence. The game was only a few minutes old when a flowing move released the impressive outside centre, Joe Horder, who burst through to score under the posts. This was converted and quickly followed by a penalty from Callum McRobbie to give Hitchin a fully deserved 10-0 lead.

This is a good Tring side though and they fought back with some muscular work from their large and well-drilled pack of forwards. Good running lines and power eventually let Tring in for a converted try of their own.  This spurred Hitchin to hit back almost immediately with a solo try from Billy “Whizz” Vernon-Hamilton who blasted through the Tring defence to score a try making the half time score 15-7 to Hitchin.

The beginning of the second half saw Tring throw the kitchen sink at the Hitchin team who stood their ground admirably. Man of the Match Callum Taylor was a rock at number 8 and led an inspired pack of forwards to drive Tring back time and again while the midfield defence, marshalled by the dominant Tom Attwell, allowed no space for the opposition. However, eventually Tring did break the line to make the score 15-12.

The visitors’ tactics were became quite easier to read and Hitchin snuffed out the danger to go back on the attack. Always looking dangerous with the ball and prompted well by influential flyhalf McRobbie, Hitchin sliced through the defence to allow Edgar Weaver to dive over for another converted try. A further penalty took Hitchin clear. Tring did score a try with one of the last plays of the game but in truth this was a fine, competitive game, enjoyed by a large crowd, that Hitchin controlled for large periods and fully deserved to win.
