Men 1XV 0 v 24 Enfield Ignatians 1xv - Away League on 5 Mar 2020

Published on Tuesday, 10 March 2020

Hitchin took on Enfield Ignatians in a re-arranged fixture, postponed due to a waterlogged pitch.  The match kicked off at 20:00 on Thursday 5th March under the floodlights on the artificial pitch at Cheshunt.  2nd placed Enfield had not lost a league match since September and dominated possession in the first quarter, but were unable to breach the Hitchin defence and were limited to two penalty kicks at goal, one missed and one scored.  Promising play was halted as Hitchin were penalized for holding on, and Enfield finally found a gap in the robust Hitchin defence to surge upfield, the score eventually coming from the talented second row.  It took 40 minutes for Hitchin to break the Enfield defensive line, a well worked move finding fly half Ben Wiggins in space.  Wiggins put a grubber kick through but the ball was well fielded by the Enfield full back, who hacked the ball out of play for a 10-0 halftime lead.

Enfield scored early in the second half, their try-scoring second row making a break through the middle, and the ball was recycled and passed through the hands for the winger to score on the left edge.  Hitchin rised to the challenge and presented one of their own, giving Enfield plenty of problems over a scoreless next 25 minutes, the highlight of which was a 50 metre break from number 8 Armel Baufume.  A standout performance from Full Back Will Evans often got things moving in attack, and in defence Flanker Sam Underwood tackled ferociously all game. The Hitchin lineout was misfiring and often allowed Enfield to clear their lines from dangerous positions.  A break from the Enfield loosehead Prop presented the platform for Enfield's third try with 6 minutes to play.  Hitchin were unable to provide a sustained threat in attack, but remained resolute in defence, frustrating their bonus point seeking opponents to the final whistle.  Final score 24-0.
